Welney is a famous and very popular venue for fishing, attracting anglers from far and wide to its rivers and lakes. Anglers using the rivers need a licence from the Environment Agency and membership of, or a day ticket from, the controlling club.

Old Bedford River and River Delph

These two adjacent rivers are close to the village, and just a short stroll from the Lamb & Flag Inn where meals and refreshments are available throughout much of the day. Parking on the roads and bridges is banned and on the Bedford Bank East parking is limited, and by courtesy of Welney Parish Council. There is however, ample parking on the pub car park courtesy of Elgood & Sons Brewery.

The rivers are non-tidal and have very little flow. They have pike to 28lbs, some zander, lots of roach, bream, perch, rudd & some carp. The Delph is well known as a good water for pike and zander, and also has some large carp and most other species. Just downstream of the Delph Bridge is a pool where the river widens from its usual
Delph pool
15m (50ft) to about 30m (100ft) and the depth increases from 2m (6ft) to over 6m (20ft). Needless to say this is a good fish holding area. Margin fishing is good with red-worm or sweet corn.

Fishing on these rivers within the parish of Welney is controlled by Welney Angling Club (see below).

New Bedford River, also known as the Hundred Foot River or Drain

This tidal river is a mile east of Welney village on the other side of the Ouse Washes. Fishing was controlled by the Cambridge Albion Angling Society in the early 2000s, but this river is not shown on their website in 2011.
Drinks and meals are available at the Lamb & Flag Inn, and light refreshments and lunches at the WWT centre along the Hundred Foot Bank.

Pisces Country Park (previously Pisces Fishery)

The landscaped lakes here are part of the award-winning park-home development situated along the Old Bedford Bank West, half a mile south west of the Old Bedford bridge.

Fishing is now reserved for holidaymakers and lodge owners/tenants, and day tickets are no longer available, although that may be subject to change. Tel: 01354 610257.

Welney Angling Club

The club was formed in 1985 by Denis Booth and Peter Redman when stretches of the local rivers became available for lease after thirty years of control by the Sheffield Angling Association. Denis was chairman and remained so until his death in 2004. Peter was secretary and treasurer until 1997 when he stood down. In 2011 the Chairman and secretary was Shaun Booth and the treasurer Alan Nelson.

Originally the club took control of fishing on both banks of the Old Bedford River from the old Welney Hotel approx one mile upstream (SW) of the Old Bedford Bridge to the "double lift mill" at Cock Fen 1½ miles downstream (NE) from the bridge, and also on the west bank of the River Delph, from the Delph bridge downstream (NW) for just over 4 miles to Welmore sluice. Later, the stretch along the Old Bedford River downstream (NW) from the bridge was extended to three miles, to the pylons. Fishing is not allowed on the east bank of the Delph.

In early 2007 the Club launched its own website. If you've landed here by mistake, or want to see the current details, rules and contacts, cast your rod to their site.
