Obituary written by Tony Smart and originally published in the Welney News in 2017

Welney ‘old boy’ Peter died suddenly on Saturday 28th January 2017 whilst attending a football match at Tottenham with John Loveday and friends.
Many older villagers will remember Peter, a popular multi talented sportsman and self taught musician.
He was the youngest of 13 children born to Daisy & Sidney Scott at Suspension Bridge and attended school at Welney & Upwell Secondary Modern.
His family were the first occupants of 7, Chestnut Avenue in 1948 before returning to Suspension Bridge in the mid fifties. On leaving Upwell at the age of 15, his sporting prowess had not gone unnoticed and received an offer from Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club to join their ground staff. Unfortunately he was not able to accept this summer only contract?
Peter married local girl Valerie Payne from Tipsend in 1959 and first lived at Burnt Chimney Drove near the old Three Horseshoes pub.
Peter and Val had 5 children - Julie, Gregory, Tracey, Nicholas & Anthony.
On leaving school in 1955, like most boys in the fifties, he followed the family tradition working on the land for local farmers - Morton Brothers, later Tom Mott before moving to Weasenham Farms at Shippey Hill, returning after two years to Gold Hill for the Jacksons.
Peter’s last full time appointment was Farm Manager for the British Horticultural Company at Wingland, near Terrington St Clement where he worked for 25 years before moving to Walpole Cross Keys.
Peter played both football and cricket mostly for the village and in his youth also for Ely City at both sports.
His family was well known in the Darts world, playing in local leagues and competitions with considerable success. Peter played mainly for local pubs - The Three Horseshoes, The Crown and Cherry Tree - all now closed.
In 1964 the Wisbech Standard invited teams of brothers to challenge the Scotts, who could play up to 8 brothers.
Eventually challenges were accepted for teams of 5 – the Scotts winning all their matches against Lawrences (Outwell), Scotts (Wilburton), Patricks (Parson Drove) & Keens (Whittlesey).
Three of the brothers Peter, George (Josh) & Maurice (Captain) won a televised final on Anglia TV.
From an original entry of 83 teams, the Scotts played the Andrews Brothers (from Lincolnshire) in the final and won the ‘About Anglia’ Darts Trophy.

Football – from Welney club records (1957 – 1973) he averaged over a goal a game during this period, scoring 258 goals in 255 matches. In season 1957/8 scoring 48 goals.
Cricket – For consecutive seasons 1958 & 59 he won the Wisbech Leagues “Star Youngster” award sponsored by the Saturday Pictorial newspaper and was selected for the League XI on numerous occasions.
His best bowling performance for Welney, a record that still stands, 8 wkts for 11 runs against Christchurch (1961) and his best batting performance 105 against March St. Mary’s (1973).
In season 2000 the club presented him with a special award having appeared for the club over a 50 year period.
Peter maintained his Welney connections and interest in the club and played in a friendly match in 2012 when over 70, along with his son and grandson, Nico and Kurt.
Until his untimely death he was the clubs main grass cutter although living in Downham Market.
Sport remained his main interest and especially enjoyed watching his grandson Kurt play football for Sutton Bridge United whilst still playing bowls, snooker, golf and fishing.
His love of music continued and was always willing to provide entertainment with his electric organ for parties and pub ‘sing-a- longs’.
Peter was well known throughout Fenland and will be sadly missed.
