November 2012 The site has moved to a new ISP host and server. During the uploading process some pages and images may be unavailable. Although the site is currently dormant awaiting a volunteer to take over as Webmaster, existing pages will continue to be available and any corrections or additions to those page will be actioned. May 2012. Our local cricket club, Welney Croft, are playing league matches this season for the first time in many years. Unfortunately their first three matches had to be called off due to the appalling wet weather, and another fixture cancelled because the opponents have withdrawn from the League. I know our team have a fearful reputation, but I don't think their joining and the other club leaving are conected. Are you wondering whats happening in Welney to mark the Queen's Jubillee? Well, me too. The Council's minutes of their April meeting said that at a meeting on 26th March attended by "7 persons", a provisional programme of events was put together (for Sunday 3rd June) commencing at 1 p.m. and continuing through until 10.30 p.m., to be held on the Lamb and Flag car park utilising the pub's garden and the Parish Hall. A further meeting had been arranged for Monday 23rd April to finalise the programme after which posters will posted around the village. Have I missed them? The Council's web site link to the Jubilee programme simply produces an error message. Later update: The event did take place, apparently an enjoyable event due to hard work by a small number of people, but a disappointing turnout, and torrential rain prevented the planned outdoor events. For detailed report see Welney News issue 88. What a shame the publicity was such a shambles. March 2012 - Spring update. It seems we shall not be seeing the proposed new community hall springing up after all. Apparently the cost has probably put it "out of reach" according to the Parish Council's February minutes. The daffodils that Harold Carter planted years ago along much of the Wash Road have sprung up though, despite a deep covering of snow for a week in February. An annual reminder of a nice gentle man. At Suspension Bridge, more safety barriers have also sprung up. The works necessitated closing one lane on the bridge, with temporary lights controlling traffic flow along the remaining lane. Some of you may have noticed that the lights didn't always work. The batteries had been stolen. A reminder of the nastier aspects of life becoming all too common . ![]() ![]() January 2012 - a Happy New Year to all our many visitors. This is the time of the year that many organisations review their performance in the year just ended and say what they aim or hope to achieve in the coming 12 months. Last year the The Welney Website was much quieter than usual in covering life in the parish. Several events we did not report at all, such as the very successful and enjoyable Harvest Supper in September. Luckily for subscribers to our parish magazine the "Welney News", that was fully covered in a recent issue and the WN continues to publish many interesting stories of Welney past and present every two months. At only 30p, it's excelent value. If you don't subscribe but would like to, call 01354 610609, or e-mail: welneynews This website did introduce slideshows for the first time, and some other bits of gimmickry; and under-the-bonnet a great deal of work was done to modernise the way the site works and fits together. Most pages had a face-lift, and many had a long-overdue update. Some sections were completely re-organised to simplify and quicken navigation. But we didn't succeed in setting-up a forum for parishioners views, nor reserecting the guest-book. Most disappointingly, posting an on-line edition of the "Welney News" on this website was withdrawn after only one issue. As for this year, well I am sorry to say that it will be even quieter than last year. I have been Webmaster for over seven years and I want to devote more time to my hobbies and projects, and I need to concentrate more on domestic life too. The Parish Council minutes will be added each month as usual and from April the fortunes of our local cricket club playing their first year of League cricket for more than 15 years will be regularly reported as in the past five or so seasons; and if Welney Parish Council raise the money to build the new Community Centre I will be only too delighted to report that too, if I recover from the surprise. If anyone would like to assist me or take over as Webmaster, please let me know. Finally, if you visit and find this page hasn't been updated for a while, please don't exit, but scroll down and look at the contents in the left column, you may find some pages or links you haven't visited recently or at all, so why not give them a try. There are over 200 hundred pages on this site, you surely must find something of interest. back to top of page |

Re-painting the lower walls was undertaken by three Councillors (Sue Dobson, Vija Pratley and Steve Kerr), two parishioners (Rachel Brown and Steve's daughter, Evie) and the Parish Clerk (Mrs Pat Copeman). Congrats to all involved, nice to learn that the upkeep of the Parish Hall hasn't been entirely neglected while the Council continue their quest for a new Community Centre (a task started in late 2004 with limited success to date).

Feb 27th | Wash Road | Flooded? The EA have apparently lost their tape measure and have stopped giving depths. Yesterday the EA Floodline information was that "some water" was on the road; today's 8am update said there were "deep puddles", and at 11.20am simply that "water levels are falling". So, it it flooded or not? Yesterday's meeting (see below) obviously didn't have much effect on the EA and their appalling disregard of the inconvenience to the general public.

Forty or so adults & children gathered outside St. Mary's Church on Wednesday evening for Carol singing, encouraged by Holly Trundle (nee Goodwin), and led beautifully by Sally Kerr. Dec 5th | Meadow Lane | Norfolk County Council have decided to make the lane a "Restricted Byway". When the order is officially made (in early 2009) if there are no objections within 6 weeks it will be perfectly lawful to walk, cycle or ride a horse along the lane, but not to drive along it in a motor vehicle. However, any existing private rights held by individual landowners will not be affected by the order. Those rights may allow use of a motor vehicle, & may extend to deliveries and visitors. I understand that no decision has been made (yet?) about the gates.
Nov 20th | Wash Road | dry (but flooding signs still displayed 2 days later!)
Nov 13th | Wash Road | Yet again flooded, and and yet again a lack of information for motorists. Morning rush-hour travellers found depths of 8 inches and "bow-waves" from oncoming traffic covering car bonnets and windscreens, for several hundred yards but no warning signs from either Cambs or Norfolk Highways. Didn't the EA tell them, or were they slow to act?
Nov 7th | Meadow Lane | Parish Cllr. Steve Kerr cleared of all allegations that he failed to declare an interest when the rights-of-way issue was being discussed by the Parish Council, but guilty of trusting the Parish Clerk, Mrs Copeman, to do her job properly (she admits she failed to lodge Cllr. Kerr's declaration of interests in May 2007). The Weakest Link? If you have any views or comments on any aspect of this please e-mail webmaster.
