I was brought to Welney around 1960 on the back of my Father's BSA Bantam which he had purchased that year and had given him the freedom of the road he had not had for years. We visited his relations either cousins or second cousins We went to see a family who lived on a farm I think in all 13 were sitting down for Sunday dinner and although asked to stop we moved on to another relative who lived in the village.

Having spent the day in Welney we raced home on the Bantam across the Fens. My Uncle Stanley visited the relations more than any one else in the family but age caught him up and he died in October 2002 I have only had pass through visit to Welney over the past 40 years since my first visit and have never seen any of my fenland relations since. I have been looking into family history whenever I have had a spare moment and have found out a few little bits of info If any one can throw any more light on my family I would and my cousin would be really pleased.

My Aunt Elsie who is now 94 and still going well in Carlisle tries to help but her memory is somewhat clouded with age. She went to see her grandfather and Grandmother in Welney in about 1920 when she was 10 she said they lived near the river which doesnt help much I know GGdad first name was Martin. My grand father was Walter he apparently walked to Peterborough looking for workin the brickyards . He met my grandmother Fanny Sismey and they were married in Woodstone in 1897.

My cousin visited family in Welney but she doesnt remember who they were only all the girls had "flower" names Looking in my Fathers old diary I found an entry Jack Markham Whitehall Farm Christchurch 247 cousin. I can remember a red haired chapel singer called Reg. He visited Ailesworth Chapel after we had seen him in Welney.

Having done some research I can't find any evidence to suggest my GGGrandfather came from Welney or if my Grandfather was born there so the search goes on .

Thanks for reading this I do tryto keep in touch with events around the area by logging on to web sites such as this one they are really useful. DENNIS TAYLOR no not the one with the upside down glasses.

Editor's Note: the 13 sitting at Sunday dinner was almost certainly at White Hall Farmhouse (Whitehall Farm) which is in Tipp's End but has a Christchurch phone number, where the Markham family lived until the late 70s. It is also the home of the current (Dec 2004) webmaster and webmistress! Contact has been with Dennis Taylor by one of the younger generation of Markhams.

I am researching my family tree and have now reached the marriage of James Daisley and Mary Anne Julian around 1800 - 1805. Their children were: Henry, John, Elizabeth, Matthew, Rebecca, James, Elizabeth and Alfred. Alfred was my G.G.Grandfather. These children were born in Upwell, Tips End and Welney. I would very much appreciate hearing from relatives of the above in order to trade information about our family.

Hello and hi there to everybody in welney, this is a friendly voice from a long way away. Lincoln in fact. I left welney in September of last year to come to Lincoln and study at Bishops Grosetesste College of teacher training and the welney website is a nice reminder of home now and again. Hope all is well and to see everyone soon.

Dear Sir or Madam
I am seeking information on a famly who lived in Welney back in the 1800's
Would you be able to assist in or refer this to someone checking the churchyard for the burials of the following
Names of Rumble. And if possible some photos of the graves, I would be happy to send the costs.
I am retired and can't travel far, so I would appreciate your kind endulgence in this request.
They were in Welney prior to 1800 and up until the 1851 Census.
They would have died around 1820's ? John and Elizabeth Rumble or if they are on the old church records.
Their descendents moved to Australia
I have researched the church records for them but those years aren't filmed.[1800 -1820?]
History
In Victoria 1851 [my connection was Robert Rumble and Charlotte Watts]
Robert was a Hotel owner along with some of his sons. His wife died in 1851 house fire and he died 1869 in a buggy accident.
They were to have many descendents as well.
And in NSW 1854 [his brother Wiiliam Rumble and Henrietta Whisler she died 2 days out of Sydney in 1854
They had an enormous line of descendents whom are all over Australia today.
William pionered a lot of NSW as a carrier to the "gold diggings' up as far as into Qld.
He had 21 children in 3 marriages.
Yours truly

My ggg grandfather, Steed Arnold, emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 with his wife and two of their children (Mary and William, my gg grandfather) from Welney. Until this spring, we had no idea where in England they came from. They settled in what is now Glen Ellyn, about twenty miles west of Chicago, Illinois. Now I find the village has a website! What next? (Yes whatever next, electric lights, flush toilets? ed.)
I see by the 1881 census it appears that the remaining Arnolds had also left. If anyone can help me discover any details about the family, or help me with confirmation of what I think I already know, I will appreciate it very much.

Came across your site after looking for some details for Jack Burkenshaw who is visiting our club later this year along with Neil Burns. I play for Sark CC. Sark is a tiny island in the Channel Islands, close to France. If you ever fancy a tour please let me know, we entertain many teams every year. We are a VERY social side. It looks to me like you live in a beautiful village and have a great club.

I hope to be visiting that part of the world in the next year so will try to find your club.

I currently live on Suspension Bridge in Welney.
I am really interested in this history of the house where I live.
The house was formerly - The Hundred Foot Bank - Church of England School,
built in 1877, by the William Marshall trust. The school was sometimes
called The Mission School.
I am eager to find out anything about the history of the school, perhaps any
one in Welney has any relatives that used to attend the school before it
closed.
I am interested to know if any one may have any school records of pupils at
the school, or may know where I can see any records.
Does the name Sally Spriggins, relate to anyone I believe she was a former
pupil of the school in about 1904, any help or info would be appreciated.
Also does any one know whether the school had a bell and what became of it??
Also does any one have any old photographs or stories to tell, I would be
really interested in listentening and looking.
Also does any one have any old items that perhaps belonged to the school,
again I would love to see them.
If you can help at all in any way, whether it is stories, books, photos,
items of interest, or pieces of information passed down through the
generations, perhaps your great Grandma or Granddad went to the school,
please please contact me.

With kind regards

I have lived in Welney all my life and I am proud of where I come from, even
though everyone calls me 'Fenney' or 'Pikey'!!. I don't mind the web site,
but it isn't updated enough and I don't mind pictures of Snow, but it's
nearly April and I think it may have melted by now!!.
Is that Blue Astra still in The Lamb and Flag car park? It's been there
since Christmas!!.
I live in Huddersfield now and I study at the University. It is a different
way of life and is more fun, but I still have a soft spot for Welney and I
look forward to coming home and seeing family and my dog!.

From Clive & Janet Frusher - cjfrusher@tesco-net

We tripped into your web site by chance. As one trips into Welney en route to somewhere else. To Christchurch, or Manea or, if really lost, to Murrow or Gedney Drove End.
And, having tripped, we stumbled into your photograph taken in 1969 of presentations we had made in your village at the Cricket Club. Janet hasn't changed one bit but, as for Clive, in specs with dark hair in the back row (second right, we think), Clive now have a mop of white hair that equals, almost, that of Ray Kent.Clive is now in his late 50s; Ray must be 101. A journalist for the Wisbech Standard in those days, Clive still earns a crust by writing words - although not on cricket or football anymore. Clive has fond memories of playing for Walton Highway CC at Welney CC (Walton 29 all out, Welney 30 for nine, close of play 3.35pm) and, equally, of the warm welcome that was always received in your village. Congratulations on your, clearly, lovingly built web site and, as they say, thanks for the memories.....

Can you help?

Hello there from Lancashire
I really liked my trip around Welney. I have been there (physically) twice and have tried in the past to do research in the area. My wife's 2x great grandfather lived there for a couple of years around 1851 before coming to Lancashire. He originated from Essex. They lived in Hundred Foot Bank, I don't suppose you have access to, or can direct me to anywhere that have any pictures of Hundred Foot Bank. I do enjoy 'filling out' bare information with social history.
Anyway, great site, I wish you well and every success.

Hello,
My name is Hilary Hanbury. In March of 2001 I emailed you to ask for
information about how to set up an Oil syndicate. Here we are 18 months
later, and I thought you might like an update.
We now have 45 members in the village and I regularly put in an order for 16
- 17,000 litres four times a year. It works like clockwork and the village
notices the difference in the number of tankers wending their way through the
village now.

I would just like to thank you for giving me the inspiration to get this
started, and I hope that your syndicate is still going strong!
As a matter of interest, our last order, this week was at 14.65 a litre!
Excellent value.
Do keep in touch as it might be worth sharing information on new deals etc.

Very best wishes to you,

Hilary Hanbury

Hi
I have some information for Tim about Mary Elizabeth Knighton. She was my Great-great grandmother and my father could tell you where in Welney churchyard she was buried as he looked after her grave when he was a boy.
Frederick Knighton was from Ramsey, Hunts, his mother “Grandma Knighton of Brimstone Hill” was known to have “the longest, sharpest tongue in Christchurch”!
Tim, if you want a detailed description of where Mary is buried, leave another message here and I’ll see what I can do.

Good Luck

Hello,We are a young(ish) family looking at relocating to the Welney area - the Littleport side. We are looking for some gen on the area specifically with regard to children as we have 2 - Girl - 4 and little lad - 8 months both of whom will need to go to school, primary and nursery respectively.Could anyone enlighten us as to where we would look for the schools bearing in mind that we shall both be working in the ELY Newmarket area? Does anyone have any comment on Littleport as this seems to be the nearset sizeable village/town. Also, as far as flooding is concerned is there any worry about the Littleport side of the suspension bridge or is it all confined to the land between the bridge and Welney? What are the pubs like around the area? Walks? How busy is the A1101 between Littleport and Wisbech?

We would welcome any feedback on any subject as we do not know the area at all.

We await some feedback avidly

Thanks
