A cigarette card of a famous Fenland skater took pride and place on a skating club's wall of fame after the Cambs Times helped the owner to pass it on.

George Beaumont was sent the cigarette card of Cyril Walter Horn by his sister-in-law from Australia, but did not have a use for it. "She probably thought that a Horn in the area would like it," said Mr Beaumont, of West Delph, Whittlesey.

After getting in touch with the Cambs Times, the Welney and District Ice Skating Club agreed to take the card from Mr Beaumont (below, left), to go alongside other pictures of Fenland champions of the past that are displayed on the wall of the Lamb and Flag pub, Welney.

It was passed to club chairman Roger Giles (on right), whose son Adam is great nephew to C W Horn, at the Lamb and Flag on Tuesday.

Mr Giles said: "The fact that we have received the card that has a big connection with the Welney Skating Club and with the history of speed skating here is great."

The card, produced by Churchman's Cigarettes in 1935, commemorates C W Horn's record fourth Amateur Speed Skating Championships of Great Britain, which he won at Lingay Fen, Cambridgeshire, in December 1933.

Mr Horn was presented with championship cup that year by King Edward VII after covering the one-and-a-half mile distance in four minutes, 47.1 seconds. He defeated many experienced experts who were competing in the championships.
